Response to Rumors of Threats - September 11, 2024
Over the past two days we have received calls and messages sharing concerns about social media posts suggesting potential threats against several of our schools. These posts are known by law enforcement to have been in circulation in different parts of the state and nation for over a year, with the names of the schools being changed each time.
Our law enforcement partners have found no evidence of a credible threat to any of our campuses, and we will continue working with them on their investigation into who may be starting and sharing these rumors in our area now.
In Onslow County Schools, we take the security of our students and staff very seriously and believe school safety is a community effort. Parents, please take some time to speak with your children about the impact their words can have and help them understand there can be serious consequences to messages shared online. This not only includes school discipline, but potential criminal charges, as well.
We would continue to encourage parents, students or community members who may have specific knowledge about threats to the school to let us know so they can be appropriately addressed by the administration, our School Resource Officers, and law enforcement.
